World's Cheapest Bullet Time

Image
Broken chair and a brush wrapped in green paper. This effects shot was achieved by moving the action in 3d space rather than moving the camera in 3d space. Then I created an artificial 3d background and moved it in the inverse direction to simulate the movement of the camera. The camera doesn't actually move in reality or the 3d virtual camera in Softimage doesn't move either. The trick here (much credit to Mick McKeon - Senior designer in RTE), was the use of a broken office chair to rotate Scott and the use of a broken brush wrapped in green paper to rotate him in position. Even the footage was shot on a crappy hybrid cam. You won't find any computerized RED camera rig here with synchronization software, just a broken sweeping brush really. The GAA cups built in 3d

Image
The RTE Sport department asked me to generate the 2 GAA cups in 3d for various graphics in 2008. They were built by analyzing photographs of the original cups. I photographed them in person in the GAA museum in Croke Park, this turned out to be a waste of time however. The original cups were so badly damaged, they weren't a suitable reference for the build so I had to use images of the replicas. I even saw 'CONNO' scratched into one of the originals, it looked like it was done with a compass! They really were two battered entities.

Grubz Up! Children's TV

Opening animation of a children's TV slot on RTE (Ireland). The inspiration for the animation is drawn from http://www.airfield.ie/ where most of the series was shot. The programme will be on RTE in the Autumn. Audio composed by Ray Harmon. Design and animation Alan Eddie.

The Book of Genocide

Image
This is a group illustration project concerned with the socially unacceptable and illegal acts of cruelty committed in the Bible in the name of our Lord. http://bookofgenocide.blogspot.com/ I will contribute this piece to this interesting idea by Alan Dunne and Steve McNally. This is the wonderful passage: Elisha & The Bears And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them. 2 Kings 2:23-2:24 Would you slaughter 40 kids if they had a laugh at your comb-over ? I think this passage clearly shows the motivation to create monsters such as the Devil. Maybe then it won't be so funny.

Footlocker

'They are near your socks' was an entry for the Footlocker, sort of make them a free advert competition. They pay you 65 pairs of sneakers (€1000 ish) to make an ad for them and save €125,000 for themselves. I know 2 things in life, good math, and how to wiggle ears independently so I went for it! Boy did I lose!

Sommersby - short film

Well well, I have been busy making a short film with Alan Dunne (or to put it another way not busy at all). We decided to put an extreme lack of planning at the center of this project and just sort of wing it. Our prep work involved 5 min of scribbles in a pub. To look out for: Alan Dunne's earrings are 20c coins sellotaped to his ears. The military arms on my hat are literally 2 cigarettes. My Ford focus is actually not a horse. When Alan is at the window we lost Edward (the cat) so in a brilliant piece of problem solving I suggested to keep stroking as if there was a cat present. If you have seen 'Sommersby' you will know that the central plot is ridiculously funny, which renders this piece of work as something more somber. mmmmmm.

Confession (Short film)

A little girl interprets her local priest's advice as absolution for her murders. This is a black-comedy-horror from the depths of rural Ireland. This was a final year film in DLIADT, Dublin, Ireland. The Priest is played by Michael West and the girl by Lisa McKeon. Created by Alan Eddie in 2000.
