I know it's pretty rough around the edges - but I kind of enjoyed seeing it again. It has some interesting takes on interactive story telling. It's only now that I can see how I was heavily influenced by the original Austin Power's film!

The original weather was dull and dreary for the shoot, with postponements due to water droplets on the camera lens. The shot had to match the original opening sequence - which was shot in the summer time, not mid - November. So I used 3d tracking software to track the move and proceeded to fix up the scene.
The look of RTE Jr was created by Conor Cassidy and produced and animated by myself. Great fun working on these, we packed a lot in so they would have a long shelf life. We hope that kids gradually notice different bits and pieces in them over time. The project is actually an even mix between 2d and 3d. Each ident here is back to back with Halloween and Xmas. There will be more of these produced over time.
I am currently rummaging about my archive of work. I'll start posting some stuff that I think was interesting over the next little while, this is one to get started.

This SFX shot was made for a Primetime documentary about tyre dumping in Ireland and exploitation of government incentives. It's a simple shot and the result is suitably eerie. It makes me think of shots in Kubrick's 'The Shining'.

So this is a foray into full 3d rigging and character setup and animation. SetSpy is a character used to promote 'behind the scenes' footage in RTE. This is a spot promoting the television website. I created, rigged and animated the character. SetSpy was originally a purchased model - with about a day's modifications done in Softimage.
An artificial 'other side' of the studio was built in 3d complete with TV cameras with blinking lights, to look more pleasing than the existing restrictive wall and unsightly cables and accoutrements. A gobo light effect was then placed on the floor with the title of the bulletin. Creating this in 3d meant I could get accurate reflections in the floor etc. So everyday it is overlay-ed on the real live shot to give the impression of a more impressive, cohesive studio setup. All in a day's work for the artificial nature of television.
For those unfamiliar - RTE is a public service broadcaster in Ireland, in the same vein as the BBC in the UK. This piece was made for a press launch in RTE and used subsequently in on-air promotions on RTE. I am very happy with how this turned out, I feel it took on a life of it's own and has the feeling of a real epic space that you could almost walk into. This has a lot to do with Alan Dunne, the designer and art director on the project. The music is by Alexander Desplat (http://www.alexandredesplat.net/us/news-e.htm). This track was not used in the final draft (or broadcast) but it was the track that drove the design and mood of the animation - so we have included it here. This animation was also used in the promotion of RTE TWO HD in 2011.

Broken chair and a brush wrapped in green paper.
This effects shot was achieved by moving the action in 3d space rather than moving the camera in 3d space. Then I created an artificial 3d background and moved it in the inverse direction to simulate the movement of the camera. The camera doesn't actually move in reality or the 3d virtual camera in Softimage doesn't move either. The trick here (much credit to Mick McKeon - Senior designer in RTE), was the use of a broken office chair to rotate Scott and the use of a broken brush wrapped in green paper to rotate him in position. Even the footage was shot on a crappy hybrid cam. You won't find any computerized RED camera rig here with synchronization software, just a broken sweeping brush really.
We decided to put an extreme lack of planning at the center of this project and just sort of wing it. Our prep work involved 5 min of scribbles in a pub. To look out for: Alan Dunne's earrings are 20c coins sellotaped to his ears. The military arms on my hat are literally 2 cigarettes. My Ford focus is actually not a horse. When Alan is at the window we lost Edward (the cat) so in a brilliant piece of problem solving I suggested to keep stroking as if there was a cat present. If you have seen 'Sommersby' you will know that the central plot is ridiculously funny, which renders this piece of work as something more somber. mmmmmm.

Alan Eddie - alanedd(at sign)gmail(dot)comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10557111833140538847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8367504761094272431.post-76520480208581268362009-08-12T03:47:00.000-07:002009-08-12T04:28:26.822-07:00Confession (Short film)
A little girl interprets her local priest's advice as absolution for her murders. Gay had never done a greenscreen shoot before, but once briefed, took it in his stride. It can be difficult when you have to guess at your possible surroundings might be. It was shot by Dave Perry, with makeup by Fiona Hogan. The 'Bullet Time' technique was achieved by rotating Gay on a rented turntable. In creating the 3D and effects, we actually rotate the scene to match Gay's movement. While leaving the virtual camera static, this makes us feel the camera is travelling around Gay. An RTE News promo made a few years ago was a main reference for this technique. First, we edited the greenscreen footage to the track, then we keyed out the green. Then it was simply a case of generating all the imagery and compositing it all together. Perhaps 'simply' was a bad choice of word. We shot footage on campus that would become the park in which Gay is reading the paper in. The bench he is sitting on was built on the computer too. The 'Keep off the grass' sign was built in 3D and composited on to footage that was shot near the radio centre. The real camera move was tracked with software so the sign appears to be really in the grass. Thanks to Sean Condon and David Stafford for helping on the shoot.Alan Eddie - alanedd(at sign)gmail(dot)comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10557111833140538847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8367504761094272431.post-33009987713420170162009-02-23T11:38:00.000-08:002009-02-23T11:45:49.025-08:00Audrey! These are 2 Christmas idents based around the centre of Dublin. I technically supervised the shoot (great craic) and produced the f/x and 3d animation. People were curious and friendly until a car blew up outside Penny's - no kidding. They took their camera phones and wandered in that general direction. What is the world coming to when people want to photograph carnage, having said that I got some nice shots of the burning car. We had to wait until the smoke cleared to continue. It's all Christmassy and I really enjoyed working on these with Jim Booth and Conor Cassidy. I have posted a before shot, just to illustrate how threatening Henry St. looked. Thank God for computers. I also sneakily put my name into the ident, picture below. These will be on RTE ONE all over Chrismas 2008.
Alan Eddie - alanedd(at sign)gmail(dot)comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10557111833140538847noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8367504761094272431.post-51400967259519566822008-11-06T08:20:00.001-08:002008-12-09T13:50:56.486-08:00Breathing life into PeigThe aim of this was to extract Peig from an iconic photo, reassemble the scene in 3d and animate the contents as if it was a live shoot.
